
About This Workshop
The present day libraries are extensively using the Information Technology for information management. As part of storage and access of digital information, the libraries are developing their own digital libraries
The Open Access and Open Source Software movements have gained rapid momentum world over. Many institutions and organizations are setting up open access digital repositories using open source software, following open standards. There are a number of free open source software available for developing digital libraries and DSpace (http://www.dspace.org ) is one of the most popular software developed jointly by MIT Libraries and HP labs. DSpace is a digital asset management system. It helps create, index and retrieve various forms of digital content DSpace is adaptable to different community needs. Interoperability between systems is built-in and it adheres to international standards for metadata.
This workshop is planned to meet the growing interest in Developing a Digital Libraries especially using DSpace by various LIS professionals.
Dyuthi Digital Repository of CUSAT is the outcome of successful launching of a Digital Repository using the Dspace by CUSAT (http://dyuthi.cusat.ac.in).
The workshop is aimed at encouraging the LIS Professionals to build their own institutional digital libraries and digital repositories
Originally known as University of Cochin, the University came into being in 1971 through an Act of the Legislature of Government of Kerala that was the result of a concerted campaign for postgraduate education in the State of Kerala. The mission of the university is to make distinctive and eloquent contributions to the cause of higher education in science and technology. CUSAT has pledged to strive to offer teaching of the highest quality and to engage in research and scholarship that will contribute to the advancement of knowledge. The motto of the university is 'Tejasvinavadhithamastu', which conveys, 'May learning illumine us both, the teacher and the taught'.
INFLIBNET Centre is an autonomous Inter-university Centre of the University Grants Commission. It is involved in creating infrastructure for sharing information among academic and research community of the country. Its major activities include training of LIS professionals, creation of national databases, software development etc. Presently it is involved in two major projects viz. UGC Infonet (interconnecting about 180 universities in a wide area network) and e-journal subscription to universities in consortium mode.
A number of free software are available for developing digital libraries. Dspace (http://www.dspace.org) is one of the most popular software available. It has been developed jointly by MIT Libraries and HP labs. DSpace incorporates digital asset management system and helps create, index and retrieve various forms of digital content. Dspace is adaptable to various needs of Libraries and Informatiion Centers and maintains in-built interoperability programs for application between various systems. It adheres to international standards for metadata.
The HP (Hewlett-Packard Company) is the largest technology company in the world and operates in nearly every country. HP specializes in developing and manufacturing computing, storage, and networking hardware, software and services. The MIT Libraries and Hewlett-Packard (HP) jointly developed DSpace. The system is now freely available to research institutions world-wide as an open source system that can be customized and extended.
This workshop is to provide an overview of the DSpace, Open source software jointly developed and promoted by MIT and HP for developing digital libraries, institutional repositories, archives etc. Workshop also provides practical training to the participants to built digital library collection. This event will facilitate interaction between national experts. Deliberation of the experts and subsequent discussions will help to develop the capacity for building digital collections.

By Road: The main traffic route into the University is the NH47 from Ernakulam (Cochin, Kochi) which is passing through Alwaye. As you approach South Kalamassery on the NH47 from Ernakulam (Alwaye), follow the University sign to the right (left) at the traffic lights. The university is just 1.5 km from here. The local bus service provide a convenient way of moving between the University and the city (Ernakulam and Alwaye). If you are traveling by one of these buses, you have to get down at "South Kalamassery Bus Stop". From there you can either walk (15 minutes) to the campus or take a three wheeler .
By Train: Cochin is well connected to all main destinations in India by a very good train network. If you are coming from south, you have to get down at one of the two stations (Ernakulam Junction (South) or Ernakulam North). You will need a taxi or a bus to reach the campus. The nearest bus stop to the Ernakulam Junction railway station is "Jos Junction". This stop is just in front of the Avenue Regent Hotel in Mahatma Gandhi (MG) road. If you are getting down at Ernakulam North railway station, then the nearest bus stop is "North" which is in front of the Reserve Bank of India building in Shanmugham road. From Ernakulam, you always have to take a bus to Alwaye and get down at "South Kalamassery" bus stop. If you are coming from north, you can either get down at Alwaye Railway Station or one of the stations at Ernakulam. From Alwaye also you need a taxi or bus to reach the campus. From Alwaye you always have to take a bus to Ernakulam and get down at "South Kalamassery" bus stop.
By Air: Cochin International Airport is just 20 km from the campus. Number of carriers are operating from here to domestic and international destinations. You will need a taxi to reach the campus from the airport. Prepaid taxi is available, you have to contact the the prepaid taxi desk at the arrival terminal. See also the section By Road.
